Description: The Literacy Instructor will work directly with the Foundation’s literacy consultant to provide an intensive level of differentiated literacy instruction to a handful of students throughout the school day.  This position is responsible for working with 1st – 5th grade students in small groups to address specific skills/concepts that require reinforcement, as well as to provide students with grade level reading instruction.  The targeted students are significantly behind grade level and therefore require an intensive instructional environment.  The Literacy Instructor will consistently collaborate with the literacy consultant and teachers to plan for and achieve student literacy improvement.  Please note, the Intensive Literacy Instructor will be employed directly through the Center for Sound Literacy Foundation and will work with public/charter school students in an urban setting. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with literacy consultant and teachers to identify student weaknesses and prepare multiple differentiated lessons to achieve growth in those areas. 
  2. Present lessons and/or interventions to students individually or in small groups.
  3. Effectively collect, analyze, and interpret student data on a regular basis to inform daily lessons. 
  4. Think outside of the box to deliver differentiated instruction, as a step-by-step curriculum is not followed.
  5. Effectively communicate with literacy consultant and classroom teacher, specifically regarding any needs or concerns related to the students.
  6. Prepare and carefully implement instructional plans based off each student’s needs, these plans will need to contain a combination of grade level content, as well as interventions and be highly reflective of student’s daily needs.
  7. Foster and maintain relationships with potentially high-risk students who may possess behavioral challenges.
  8. Create an environment that engages students in their learning, as well as offers flexibility to meet each student’s individual needs.
  9. Cooperate with co-workers, administration, children, and parents in a positive and supportive manner.
  10. Participate in PLCs, staff meetings, and extra-curricular events to be set by the building.
  11. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree and teacher certification.
  2. Knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development, as well as an instinctual ability to provide students with literacy instruction. Willingness to continue to learn deep literacy knowledge both on own and under direction of literacy consultant.
  3. Ability to utilize data to carefully and thoughtfully plan instruction tailored to each student on an ongoing basis.
  4. Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, collaboration) to fully engage with building literacy consultants, administration and teachers.
  5. Strong organizational skills.
  6. Abilities to take initiative and work independently.

Description: The Interventionist will work directly with building literacy consultant to ultimately provide a high level of literacy support to students in K-5 urban classrooms.  This position is responsible for working with students individually or in small groups to address specific concepts/skills that require reinforcement.  The small groups will contain students from multiple grade levels and the Interventionist will work with many groups each day.  The groups will change regularly throughout the school year, based on the students’ needs.  The Interventionist will consistently collaborate with the literacy consultant to plan for and achieve student literacy improvement.

Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with building literacy consultant to identify student weaknesses and prepare lessons to achieve growth in those areas. 
  2. Present lessons/interventions to students individually or in small groups, while consistently managing students’ behaviors. 
  3. Accountable for effectively communicating with literacy consultant, specifically regarding any needs or concerns related to the students.
  4. Utilize data (formal assessments and your daily observations) to dictate future lessons/instructions, while collaborating with literacy consultant to ensure students’ needs are being addressed. 
  5. Adhere to and carefully implement instructional plans as communicated by the literacy consultant. 
  6. Foster and maintain relationships with students in order to engage them in their learning.
  7. Cooperate with co-workers, administration, children, and parents in a positive and supportive manner.
  8. Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  1. Completed at least two years of study at an institution or higher education (60 credit hours) or obtained an Associate’s or higher degree or achieved a passing score on a MDE approved assessment.
  2. Previous experience working with K-5 students in an academic environment, preferably with a literacy context.
  3. Some knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development.
  4. Interpersonal skills (communication, problem solving, conflict management, collaboration) to work effectively with teachers, literacy consultant, and students.
  5. Strong organizational skills.
  6. Ability to take direction and effectively carry out instructional plans prepared by teacher/literacy consultant.
  7. Demonstrated ability to uphold confidentiality requirements.
